The Center for Research on African-American Women

The Center for Research on African- American Women (The Center) focuses on critical issues relevant to African-American women that can be of significance for policy decision-making.

The Center engages in research oriented projects that examine the lives of African-American women in the areas of education, economics, and health in the United States and abroad. The Center publishes the annual scholarly journal, Phillis, named in honor of Phillis Wheatley, the first African-American woman to publish in the United States. Other program areas of The Center include:

  • Establishment of the Black Women in Politics Archive
  • The Vivian A. Ware Research Fellowship
  • The Stephanie Tubbs Jones Institute for Social Justice
  • The Sister Scholars Advisory Council
  • The National Reading Circle
  • The Center’s Reference and Reading Room

The Delta Research and Educational Foundation established the Sister Scholars Advisory Council in April 2009 to provide counsel for The Center. The Council is comprised of African-American women scholars and professionals who reside throughout the nation. The Center was established in 1997 by the Foundation and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority to serve as a resource facility to examine the complex factors influencing African-American Women’s lives.
