Delta Foundation Unveils Living Tribute to the Honorable Stephanie Tubbs Jones During Delta Days

Standing before an audience approaching 1,000 members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. attending the 23rd Annual Delta Days in the Nation’s Capital event, held February 6, 2012, Alison Harmon, Ed.D., President of The Delta Foundation and Cynthia M. A. Butler-McIntyre, National President, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. announced two major founding gifts totaling $125,000 that officially launched the new Stephanie Tubbs Jones Social Justice Institute Internship program. 

Clinton Family Foundation Gift

A $100,000 gift from The Clinton Family Foundation, established by former President William Jefferson Clinton and current Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton in honor of their long-time friend, ensured the living legacy of the late Congresswoman’s dedication to increasing the ranks of minority women prepared for public service. The generous contribution by Delta member an$25,000 Gift Presented by Michele V. Hagansd Washington, DC businesswoman, Michele V. Hagans of $25,000 further made certain that the Institute’s program met its 2012 program objectives.

The internship’s implementing partner, the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (CBCF), represented at the announcement by its President and CEO, Elsie Scott, Ph.D., stated that the first Stephanie Tubbs Jones Social Justice intern “will be selected for the summer program.”

The announcement capped a two-hour tribute to the late Congresswoman’s dedication to public service, social justice, and women’s empowerment as part of the Foundation’s Second Annual Forum of the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Social Justice Institute.  Presenters, each relaying the meaningful contributions made by the late Congresswoman, included:  Barbara Walker, Member, National Social Action Commission, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and sister of the Honorable Stephanie Tubbs Jones; childhood friend, Sandra “Jaribu” Hill, Esq., Executive Director, Mississippi Workers Center for Human Rights and Member, National Social Action Commission; former Congressman Louis Stokes (D-OH); sitting Congresswoman Marcia L. Fudge (D-OH), and Cynthia M.A. Butler-McIntyre, President, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. 

The Forum, now in its second year and co-convened by  the Social Action Commission of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is an integral part of the Delta Days programming schedule. The session aims to increase and enhance Forum participants’ knowledge about issues and topics often marginalized by mainstream society, but are top of the agenda for Black women and their families as expressed by The Delta Foundation President Alison Harmon, and reiterated throughout the program, by the Forum’s Mistress of Ceremonies, Brittany G. Zaehringer, Esq., MSSA, and the Foundation’s newly appointed Director of Operations.
