National Reading Circle Selects Book for 2010-11

The Center for Research on African American Women has announced the 2010-11 National Reading Circle book selection: " The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Color Blindness" by Michelle Alexander.

The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Color Blindness book selection was announced during a workshop that presented activities on The Center entitled:  “Where Sisters Know Best.” The workshop was presented by The Center’s Sister Scholars Advisory Council at the 50th National Convention of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in August 2010.

The New Jim Crow was published by the New Press this year and had received outstanding reviews.  Alexander, the book’s author, is an associate professor at Ohio State University Moritz School of Law and the Kirwan Institute for the Study of Race and Ethnicity.  She is a long time civil rights advocate and litigator.  This is her first book.

The Center will release a Reader’s Guide for the book in January 2011.  Check the Foundation website to acquire one and learn how to form a reading circle in your community. The National Reading Circle is a collaborative effort of the National Commission on Arts and Letters of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and The Center for Research on African American Women.
